What is Combined Java+Bedrock Edition?

With the release of minecraft update 1.19 on June 7, 2022, Minecraft announced a change for PC gamers: Java and Bedrock are combining. But what does that mean? Here are some basic need to knows:

  • Java and Bedrock are still two separate games with the same differences:
    • Multiplayer is still not compatible between the two games.
    • Worlds still can’t be transferred between java and bedrock.
    • Bedrock still can’t have mods.
    • Etc.
  • This is mostly a Marketing change:
    • If you buy Minecraft now, you are buying Both Java and Bedrock editions.
    • If you already had Java edition, Bedrock will be given to you for free.
    • If you already had Bedrock edition, Java will be given to you for free.
    • You may have to download the launcher from the Minecraft website to see this change.
  • When you open the Minecraft Launcher now, you can choose whether you want to play on Java or Bedrock on the left side. (It tells you which is selected at the top). Note that Bedrock edition is labeled as “Minecraft for Windows”
