Miraculous Ladybug: All Hero, Miraculous, and Kwami Info UPDATED

WARNING: SPOILERS if you haven’t seen the show!

Miraculous / Kwamis: How they Work

• “Miraculous” are jewels, such as earrings, bracelets, etc. Each miraculous has its animal-themed creature called a “Kwami”.
• When a human wears a miraculous, and says a transformation word, the kwami will be sucked into the miraculous, giving the wearer the kwami’s powers, turning them into a superhero or supervillain.

More about the Miraculous

• As said many times in the show, the miraculous jewels are “not meant for evil purposes.” Where they came from is unknown.
• Miraculous jewels are kept safe in ancient black-and-red boxes called “Miracle Boxes.” According to S3 E? “Feast,” there were several of these boxes, not just the main one shown in the show. These are later shown in the “Miraculous World” movies.
• The Miracle boxes were protected by the Order of the Guardians, a known group who would selectively choose children to train intensely to watch over the miraculous in the Temple of the Guardians.
• The last remaining miracle box, along with the Ancient Spell Book, escaped with Master Fu, a child training at the temple (after he accidentally destroyed it by summoning a sentimonster with the peacock miraculous).
• The main miracle box in the show holds 19 miraculous: that of the ladybug, black cat, fox, bee, turtle, butterfly, peacock; and the 12 Chinese Horoscope Animals: the dragon, rabbit, tiger, ox, rat, pig, dog, rooster, monkey, horse, goat/sheep, and snake.
• The miracle boxes take a representation of their owner. When Marinette becomes the guardian of the miraculous, the miracle box turns into a rounder appearance more like ladybug’s, and also has different spontaneous rules since Marinette is unpredictable.
• The miraculous themselves can have 2-3 different appearances: that when the kwami’s power is inside and being used, “camouflage mode” (as first mentioned in S3 E? “Timetagger”), and when the owner is simply wearing the miraculous but the kwami is free. It is unclear if camouflage mode is different than when the kwami is simply not inside.
• If a miraculous is broken, it will cause serious harm to anyone who uses it. Both Emilie and Natalie used the broken peacock miraculous, which caused them both to fall seriously ill, including coughing, fatigue, and inability to walk. This harm becomes fatal. Miraculous can be fixed, but only with a very specific potion.

More about the Kwamis

• Kwamis are genderless and cannot experience love, although Plagg seems to flirt with Tikki a lot.
• Kwamis are under the service of their owner or master. Their master has the ability to force control over them in different ways, such as when Hawkmoth demands Nooroo no longer speak or leave a certain radius around him, in which Nooroo’s mouth physically becomes closed and an actual barrier is formed.
• Without an owner, a Kwami can still use their power, however it is extremely uncontrolled, out of proportion, and causes crazy side effects. See each kwami for more info.
• Kwamis cannot say the name of their owner, in the context that it would reveal who their owner is. For example, Tikki can say Marinette’s name, but she can’t say “My owner, Marinette,” or similar. Not to humans or other Kwamis. If they try, their owner’s name gets turned into bubbles. This “curse” is only lifted if the holder Renounces them, but not if the miraculous is taken. For example, Marinette as the guardian did not renounce any of the miraculous when Hawkmoth stole them, so when he demanded them to tell him the name of their previous owner, they were still unable to do so.
• Kwamis cannot lie, but they are not required to tell the whole truth.
• A kwami is released from their miraculous both when a smaller version of the miracle box is opened, and when their miraculous is put on. (The miracle box has a separate realm for kwamis whose miraculous are idly sitting in the large miracle box. However, the kwami must return to their miraculous when being carried in the smaller miracle boxes used to be delivered to new humans, and will be re-released when the small box is opened).
• Kwamis can fly, phase through objects, and carry things much bigger than them, though their strength is still limited.
• Kwamis can get sick, even if they’re powering their owner. They can be healed immediately by a Guardian. They will get tired after using their powers too much, but stamina is almost immediately restored by eating.
• Kwamis cannot be recognized by technology. They will turn up invisible in pictures and videos, including in live video feeds from cameras. They also cannot have their voices recorded. This is odd considering they were created centuries before this kind of technology existed.
• Kwamis can communicate to a missing kwami on their birthday or “cycle.” A kwami cycle lasts “hundreds of human years,” according to Tikki in S2 E23 “Sandboy.” This is possible by entering the miracle box’s kwami realm and banding together with other kwamis at a specific moment, while singing. In attempting this in “Sandboy,” it barely worked unless almost all of the kwamis were there, but because Nooroo was powering Hawkmoth at the time they tried to reach him, Hawkmoth was able to trace the general location of the signal, meaning the communication can go even to humans.
• As revealed in S5 E26 “Recreation”/”The final day part 2,” Kwamis actually have larger forms, their real forms, which appear by saying “Reveal yourself!”
• Kwamis can “Power up” by eating power up foods either as a kwami before the hero transforms, or the hero can eat it themselves. Known power-ups: Ice (enhances the hero’s ability to stay warm and gives them iceskates), Water (allows the hero to breathe under water and gives them fins), Space (allows the hero to survive in space and fly).

More about the Kwami Realm

• The Kwami Realm (which doesn’t have a specific name that I know of) exists in the Miracle box. It is a light purple, always-night, seemingly endless world with an odd white pattern on the floor. When kwamis visit from the outside world, they often bring a gift to show the dormant kwamis what’s happening outside. Hence, there is a massive stash of human objects laying around. This is where kwamis stay when their miraculous and not currently in circulation. This has so far only been shown in S2 E23 “Sandboy.”

More about the Heroes and their Powers

• Once transformed, the outfit a kwami’s power will give a human can change. One basis is on the time period. For example, old miraculous holders wore long robes or dresses or armor, as compared to the modern heroes’ tight elastic outfits. Another basis is the human’s personality or mission as a hero, as seen by “Rena Furtive” and “Cat Walker.” These outfits are “magic,” and can’t be removed unless the miraculous is removed.
• Every kwami gives their holder more agility, stamina, strength, and better protection to injury though there are still limits. If a human is injured before transforming, they will still be injured as a hero. They can also still be killed as a hero. It also seems to help with eyesight, as Sabrina, who wears glasses normally, doesn’t have anything over her eyes as Miss Hound.
• Young heroes can only use their power once, then they have 5 minutes before their kwami runs out of energy and they have to transform back and recharge. Adult heroes can use their power as many times as they want without needing to take a break.
• If a hero’s miraculous is removed or if a young hero’s 5 minutes are up, they will slowly start to destransform, starting with their fingertips and toetips, then their back, then the edges of their mask. In S5 E23 “Revolution,” Ladybug and Chat Noir were able to slow down their detransformation with sheer willpower.
• The personality of the kwami fuses with the personality of the human when they transform into a hero. This is show in S5 E7 “Passion” when Mr. Bug and Lady Noir appear for the second time, and Mr. Bug says to Lady Noir “my suit has a weird affect on you” when she’s being overly flirty.

Ladybug Kwami

• Superpower(s): “Lucky Charm” creates one object perfect to use in that specific situation. Throwing the object into the air reverts the lucky charm back and puts everything back the way it was before villain destruction. “De-evilize” cleans akumas back into normal butterflies. Ladybug has also been able to create magic charms which enhances positive emotions and helps ward off akumas.
• Using power without a holder: Tikki created a giant galette to satisfy her sweet tooth. Apparently this isn’t the first time her sweet tooth has caused her to create sweets for her own desires. Doing so caused giant cracks in the ground.

Marinette is clumsy, awkward, creative, caring, and determined. Paired with Tikki’s personality, as Ladybug she is responsible, determined, careful, and bold.

• Akumatized version: Ladybug has never been akumatized. In S2 E25 “Catalyst”/”Hero’s Day part 1,” Hawkmoth causes an illusion of an akumatized Ladybug. She didn’t say her name.

By lightly touching the Eiffel Tower, he caused gigantic cracks to appear all over Paris. He also may have caused natural disasters to occur in the past.
